Charleston Charter School for Math and Science PERCUSSION INSTRUCTOR GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the site administrator and an assistant to the high school Band Director, the Percussion Instructor is responsible for the planning and instruction of the school’s concert percussion scholars (6th – 12th grade). Responsibilities may encompass marching band percussion. The instructor prepares appropriate music and rehearses the ensemble for independent performances and possible competitions in accordance with the school curriculum. The duties of the percussion instructor are as follows: • Engage scholars to practice, play, and perform the introduced materials. • Stay actively participating in assisting scholars in sectionals and whole group rehearsals. • Teach drum line basics, warm-ups, marching techniques, stick work, and cadences for marching/playing at athletic, school, and community events. • Teach and assist players with mallet and timpani technique. • Monitor and control scholar behavior according to established procedures. • Adjust and maintain percussion instruments, ensuring timely availability for scholar use. • Be able to work outdoors and indoors; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather. • Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Band Director, i.e., conduct ensemble for school celebrations, concerts, or rallies.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma
• Strong background in marching band and percussion performance.
• Experience in the various sub groups of the percussion section (e.g. snare, bass, tenors, mallets, etc.)
• Ability to inspire scholars, building enthusiasm and love of the subject
• Ability to tune/replace drum heads and do minor repairs on drumline equipment.
• Ability to work effectively with scholars, staff, parents, administrators, and community members.
• Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and exercise good judgment in making decisions.
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Ability to interact with scholars of different ages and skill levels positively and professionally.
• Be responsible for the selection, training, and performances at designated events.
