Description
Coker University in Hartsville, SC, seeks an adjunct instructor to direct the Coker Concert Band beginning August 2025 for the 25-26 academic year. The Coker Concert Band is composed of committed and motivated Coker students, community members, and high school students. The concert band presents two concerts per semester: Fall - a Masterworks Concert and a Holiday Pops concert (often with Coker choirs); Spring - a Masterworks concert and an outdoor Pops Concert. Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 5.30pm-7.00pm, and concerts are typically presented on Monday or Wednesday nights. Salary is competitive and based on candidate qualifications. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to teach applied lessons on woodwind or brass instruments in the Coker Community Music Program for additional compensation. Requirements
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education (with an instrumental emphasis)
Preferred: Master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting or Music Education
At least 5 years of ensemble conducting experience or public school band teaching
Ability to select and rehearse repertoire appropriate for a mixed-ability student/community ensemble
Takes a learner-centered approach to ensemble direction
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to work collaboratively with visual and performing arts faculty
EXPERIENCE
Teaching and conducting student and community instrumental ensembles
Teaching instrumental methods for Choral Music Education students
Teaching applied lessons in any woodwind or brass instrument
Conducting musical theatre productions
Recruiting band instrument players (especially woodwind)
