Guidelines for In-School Band Class & Outdoor Marching Band Rehearsals

Fellow Directors:

I hope that this correspondence finds you all well and safe. Please find the linked “Guidelines for In-School Band Class and Outdoor Marching Band Rehearsals.” The guidelines provided have been compiled based on CDC Guidelines, guidelines provided by the South Carolina High School League, and the “Student Safety and Music Program Continuation Ideas For Consideration” by the American Bandmasters Association. In June, we sent out guidelines for STEP 1, Return to Summer Marching Band Rehearsals. This guide addresses band class rehearsals during the school day and outdoor marching band activities.

It is our goal that these guidelines will allow students, faculty, and staff to continue in-person training and group activities while maintaining a safe environment. If your program is holding in-person rehearsals indoors or outdoors, the need to follow these guidelines is strongly suggested. However, please understand that the guidelines that follow are just that, guidelines, and specific procedures and directives will be made by your individual school district. All directors should continue to consult with their respective school district officials to ensure that district-specific mandates and guidelines are being followed.

Sincerely,

Chaz Paxton, President
South Carolina Band Directors Association
