Dr. Mark E. Britt


Dr. Mark E. Britt, trombonist, joined the faculty of Furman University as the low brass professor in 1995. He serves as a coach for the brass chamber music program and is a conductor of the Furman University Trombone and Brass choirs. Prior to his appointment at Furman, Dr. Britt served on the faculties of Valdosta State University, Columbus State University, Appalachian State University and taught at The Florida State University. He was a band and choral director for four years in the North Carolina public schools and is active as a conductor, soloist, clinician, and adjudicator at high schools and universities across the country. He is founder and conductor of the Palmetto Posaunen, a professional trombone ensemble, and is a member of the Zephyr Brass, a brass trio comprised of brass faculty from Furman, Stetson University and the University of Georgia.

An active performer, he has appeared at the 1996 International Brassfest, the 1998 and 2001 Eastern Trombone Workshops, the 1999 International Trombone Festival and the 2001 International Horn Symposium.  In addition, he plays regularly with the Greenville and Spartanburg Symphonies. His articles have appeared in BANDWORLD, The Instrumentalist, the North Carolina Music Educators Journal, the International Trombone Journal, and the Texas Bandmasters Journal. Dr. Britt serves as the Teacher Education Chairman of the South Carolina Music Educators Association, is the Southern Division Co-chairman for the Collegiate Membership of MENC, and is on the National Collegiate Advisory Board for MENC.

His principal teachers have been Harold McKinney (ASU), the late Frank Crisafulli (Chicago Symphony), and John Drew (FSU). Dr. Britt is a member of the International Trombone Association, the Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association, the Music Educators National Conference, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha, and Kappa Delta Pi. He received the Bachelor of Music Education from Appalachian State University, the Master of Music in Performance from Northwestern University, and the Doctorate of Music in Performance from The Florida State University.
