Irmo High School Invited to perform at Midwest Clinic! WEST FLORENCE BAND PLAYS FOR PRESIDENT All the excitement began last Friday when the band received an invitation from Congressman Jim Clyburn's office to perform for President Clinton when his plane landed at Columbia International Airport on Wednesday. Principal Alan Harrison and Band Director Mike Jones began making plans, securing buses, and finding the proper musical arrangement of "Hail To The Chief" to play for Mr. Clinton. Students were informed of the trip in their band class and the excitement began as the word quickly spread throughout the school and the community. On Monday, rehearsals were scheduled, instruments were polished and shoes were shined as the students began to prepare for the performance. The excitement, anticipation and nervousness built as the West Florence Band buses arrived at the airport in Columbia. Students unpacked their instruments, buttoned their uniforms and went through the security checkpoints and metal detectors as their instruments and persons were inspected carefully before entering the airport grounds. The drama built as the band entertained the crowd with several songs while awaiting the arrival of the President. Finally, as the President's plane rolled to a stop, a hush came over the crowd and the West Florence Band students proudly performed "Hail To The Chief" as Mr. Clinton came down the stairs of his plane. The band was then honored as Mr. Clinton walked over to the band and spoke with them for a few minutes. The President thanked the students for coming and told them that the music sounded wonderful. He then posed for pictures with the band before moving on to greet other people. The band students again played several other songs for the crowd as Mr. Clinton visited with them. |
