Leland S. “Sandy” Scott is
a native of Greenville, South Carolina, and a 1960 graduate of Parker
High School. While he was a member of the Parker High School
band,
Sandy was under the leadership of Mr. James B. Senn. Mr. Senn remains
both a friend and mentor. Sandy was Drum Major at both Parker High
School and Furman University, and he graduated from Lander College
with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music.
Sandy served as Band Director at Ellen Woodside High School from 1962-1963.
He was Band Director at Belton High School from 1963-1965 and the Abbeville
High School Band Director from 1965-1981. He established the Southeastern
Marching Band Contest in Abbeville, SC drawing some of the top bands
in the country. Sandy also led the only high school band in the state
with
bagpipes. The bagpipers were led by Mrs. Virginia Ferguson.
Sandy’s Abbeville High School band won the SCBDA State Class Marching
Band Championships for eight consecutive years in Classes A, AA and AAA.
His Abbeville band won the National Cherry Blossom Championships in Field
Show and Parade Competition, and it won in the National De Soto Festival
in Bradenton, Florida, including the Grand Championship. His band also
won the Governor’s Cup in St. Petersburg, Florida at the Festival
of States and the Heart of St. Petersburg plaque twice.
Other awards that the Abbeville band has received under Sandy’s leadership
include: the Division Inspection Trophy in the South Carolina Marching
Band Championship for three years; Grand Champion of the Furman University
Marching Band Contest; Double Superior rating at the State Music Festival;
South Carolina Upper State Fair Ground Championship and First Place Class
AAA Carolinas’ Carousel. Sandy’s bands attended the Shrine
Bowl three times and represented South Carolina in President Jimmy Carter’s
Inaugural Parade, and performed at the “Greatest Bands in Dixie” Contest
in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Sandy’s professional affiliations include the MENC, SCMEA, SCBDA,
Phi Mu Alpha, Gamma Eta Chapter; and Phi Beta Mu, Theta Chapter. He served
on the Marching Band Committee and the All-State Audition Committee. He
has actively participated in civic affairs, was President of the Abbeville
Rotary Club, and was President of the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce. He
has served on the City Council as Mayor Pro Tem. In 1971, he was named
Abbeville’s “Young Educator of the Year” and the South
Carolina “Young Educator of the Year” in 1972. In 1975 he received
Abbeville’s “Young Man of the Year Award”.
Sandy has served as clinician and adjudicator in the Southeastern and
Midwestern states.
Sandy Scott also served Forestville Baptist Church of Greenville, South
Side Baptist Church of Abbeville and Callie Self Memorial Baptist
Church of Greenwood as Minister of Music.
Sandy is married to Verlene O’Kelley Scott. They have
two children: Keith Russell Scott and Lisa Diane Bannister. Sandy and
Verlene have
four grandchildren: William Sanders Scott, Ashtin Haley Scott, Phillip
Michael Bannister, and Matthew Scott Bannister.
Sandy is presently the Senior Pastor of Callie Self Memorial Baptist
Church of Greenwood. He is also a member of the South Carolina Baptist
Singing Churchmen.
