B.
Registration for Auditions
1. The registration deadline is
November 7, 2008. Any registration form
postmarked November 8-14,
2008, will be assessed a late
fee of $2.00 per registered student. Region Chairpersons will not
accept any registration form
postmarked after November 14, 2008. (Directors should take note
that this is a postmark
deadline. Registering on Band Link on or before November 7, but
getting a postmark November
8-14, 2008, will require that late fees be added.) All
changes/corrections to the
registration form (i.e.: Clinic to Senior; Alto Sax to Tenor Sax; Snare to
Timpani; etc.) must be given to the Region Chairperson in writing
postmarked on or before the late
registration date of November
14, 2008. There is no late fee required to correct a mistake.
Additions/Changes to the
original registration form between November 8-14 will require that late
fees be added.
2. Home schooled students may participate under the following
stipulations:
a. Home schooled students must participate in a home school band
program.
b. Home school band student’s families must be a member of a South
Carolina Home School
Association.
c. Home school band students must register through their band
director, who must be a member of
SCBDA.
(see Chapter 1; Article III) Parents of home school students and
private studio
teachers or instructors may not register students.
d. Directors must send documentation of home school students
family’s SCHSA membership in lieu
of a
principal’s signature.
3. Students enrolled at the Governor’s School for the Arts are required
to register from and audition in
their “home” region. These
students would still be listed as Governor’s School students and the
Governor’s School for the Arts
would receive credit for them toward the Concert Achievement
Award.
4. Region Chairmen will mail the audition schedules on or before
December 5, 2008. If an error is
discovered after the schedule
is mailed out, and the error is determined to have occurred during the
region chairman’s scheduling
process, then the director must notify the region chairman in writing on
or before December 12, 2008.
After December 12, 2008, the region audition schedule is final and
no changes of any kind,
regardless of their origin, will be made.
5. Only the Band Director may register students to audition for
Region or All-State Band.
Directors are asked to
register students for auditions using the Online Registration Form found on
Band Link. This form must be
submitted through the website once all the information is correct and
complete. Directors will also
be required to print a copy of these forms and mail them to the region
chairman. If access to the
website is not available, then directors may use the form found at the
end of this handbook.
Regardless of which form is used, Region Chairpersons are instructed to
return
incorrect forms to the
director, and his students will not be registered until the deficiencies are
corrected. If a director
chooses to resubmit a corrected registration form and it is during the late
registration time period,
November 8-14, 2008, then the appropriate late fees ($2 per student) must
be added. See Chapter Two,
Section III, for regulations concerning registration forms.
6. An audition fee of $10.00 per
student must be included with the registration form. Make
checks payable to SCBDA.
Registration fees for the Region Band Clinics are at the discretion of the
region band directors and will
be paid along with the clinic registration after the completion of all
auditions.
7. Band Directors are urged to register only those students who, in the
director’s opinion, possess the
genuine caliber of musicianship
which will prove to be an asset to the All-State Bands. The director is
also responsible for knowing
that each of his/her students is cognizant of all audition requirements.

9. The order of the final auditions will be determined by randomizing the
students within each audition
group. This schedule will be
done by the All-State Chairman without regard for regions or schools
that normally travel together.
Late registrants; however, will be scheduled to audition early.
See Chapter Two, Section 4, for qualifications to participate in SCBDA sponsored events.
A.
Region Bands are functions of SCBDA and are subject to the same regulations
as the All-State Bands,
but they are financed independently. Expenses incurred
at Region Band Clinic activities are the
responsibility of each Region.
B. A chairman for each region is appointed by the President of the SCBDA and
shall sit as a member of
the All- State Committee, if not already an elected
member of the committee. The Region Chairman is
responsible for all activities that his region may
elect to sponsor. Region chairmen should be prepared to
register and notify participants in the auditions. His
duties include the planning, preparation, and
administration of the auditions as well as the region
band clinic. It is suggested that each Region Chairman
call a meeting of the member directors in each
region either at the Fall Meeting of the SCBDA or at the
Region Band Clinic. In addition, the
Region Chairman shall collect audition registration fees and transfer
them immediately to the
Executive Secretary/Treasurer. Expenses incurred in the operation of the
auditions will be paid by SCBDA
after the approval of the All-State Committee Chairman and the
SCBDA President, to whom all accounts
of such expenses are to be sent.
C. Directors in the region should decide if and where they will have a
Region Band Clinic. Recommended
dates are February 27-28, 2009.
D. Directors in the region may elect to sponsor other region activities.
Possibilities include stage band clinics,
clinics on students’ individual instruments,
using soloists with the clinic bands, etc.

2. Monitor judge will score Fp crescendo roll, tuning, technique, and
terms.
g. Technical Proficiency Requirements for Timpani:
Timpani tuning will not be judged separately, but in conjunction with
the tuning of the solo and the two
sight-reading pieces. If tunings are
exactly duplicated in the sight-reading pieces and or etude, the
judges may hear other tunings to ensure
three different tunings. The tuning of the timpani will be judged
before the student plays the etude, and in
the case of the sight-reading, the pitches to be tuned will be
written on the outside of the sight-reading
folder in musical notation. The student’s tuning can then be
evaluated before the student opens the
folder to begin studying the sight-reading. This process is to be
repeated for the second sight-reading
example. Each sight-reading selection accounts for 15 points.
The player will also perform a Fp crescendo
roll for 5 points. This will be the equivalent of the winds’
chromatic scale. Senior Band students will
be allowed 20 seconds per tuning (all drums in 20 seconds,
not 20 seconds per drum). Clinic Band
students will be allowed 30 seconds per tuning, while Junior
Band students will be allowed 40 seconds
per tuning. Junior tunings will include perfect fourths and
fifths only. Clinic and Senior tunings
could use all intervals for tuning.
A.
Each student should report to their audition with an audition ticket. They
should not identify their name,
school, teacher or region. Judges will be instructed
not to request
any of this information from students
who are auditioning. (See Audition
Ticket at the end of this chapter.)
B.
Students who are late to their audition must report to the Chairman in
charge of the audition and may be
moved to the end of the audition order.
C.
All candidates may audition on one instrument only. Percussionists are to
specify their
major instrument
at the time of registration. Changes will not be allowed.
D. A
complete set of percussion equipment will be provided for all Percussion committees. Mallet players
should have the choice of auditioning on marimba
or
xylophone. Both instruments should be made
available in the audition room.
E. No wind instrument manufactured primarily for marching band may be used in
the auditions or clinic.
F. String Bass players will be selected through the All-State Orchestra
audition for Region and All–State
Band. In a school that has a string bass player that
wishes to
audition, but does not have an orchestra
program, the band director may
register the
student to audition as long as they are an active member of
SCMEA and SCBDA.
G.
Cornets and Trumpets will audition together without regard to which
instrument is played.
H.
The euphonium etude is for treble or bass clef. Manuscript Copies are
allowed for transposed parts.
Substitutions for other instrument solos will not be
allowed.
I. The audition committees will be made up of members of SCBDA and others who
are
deemed as
qualified to judge. The Region and/or All-State Chairman will be
responsible for assigning directors to
specific committees. The type of committee;
single, double, or triple will determine the number of
committee members.
The type of
committee will be determined by the Region or All-State Chairman
with
regards to the
number of students registered for that particular level or instrument.
J. All directors registering students will be required to judge or work
in some other capacity
at the Region and at the All-State Final Auditions unless
released in advance by the
Region or All-State Chairman who is overseeing the
tryouts. Students attending the school(s)
of those directors refusing to
work in some capacity will be ineligible to audition and will forfeit
their registration
fees. Any director who fails to fulfill his/her judging responsibility, whether
by not
showing up or leaving the audition site without permission from the chairman, will
have
the audition results of the students from the school at which he/she teaches
removed
from the audition process. Students who attend the school(s) at which
this director teaches will
forfeit their audition fees and lose the right to participate in the
Region or All-State audition process
for the remainder of the school year. It should
also be noted that in schools with two or more
directors, that ALL the directors and
assistants (who are current members of SCBDA and
MENC) must comply with these
guide-lines in order for students from that school to
remain eligible to compete
in the Region a and/or All-State Band audition process.
K.
Judges for both auditions will conduct themselves with the highest degree of
ethics and
professionalism.
L. A
practice or audition will be presented to for all judges using the
evaluation sheet. Special care will be
taken in the following areas:
1. Understanding and marking the scale grid
2. Scoring the etude
3. Understanding and marking the sight-reading grid
M.
Single committees will be scheduled eight minutes per student while using
one room;
double committees
will be scheduled at six minutes per student while using
two rooms
and triple committees will be
scheduled 4 minutes per student and will use
three rooms.
N.
The Region chairman will provide a student assistant (page) for each
audition committee.
O.
There will be a three-year rotating list of solo etudes for each level and
instrument. Specialists will make
the selection of solos on particular instruments or
instrument
families. Material deemed to be
unsatisfactory may be removed or replaced
with
acceptable material. None of the instruments should
have two complete solos.
If two
pieces are used, specific sections of music for preparation will be
indicated. Basic areas to be considered in the selection of etudes include the ability to
display:
1. Tone quality.
2. Range within the audition requirements for each instrument and grade
level of student.
3. Technical proficiency
4. Typical styling
5. Contrasting styles, tempos, and articulations.
6. Different styles of phrasing
7. The student’s overall talent
(Etude material may be submitted to any All-State
Committee member for consideration. Please put
your name on all materials.)
P. The All-State chairman will secure originally composed sight-reading
examples for each instrument.
Guidelines will include:
1. Junior Band sight-reading will contain no compound meter at the first
audition. It could contain some
slow compound meter (in 6) at the second
audition. There will be no cut time sight-reading for the
Junior Band. The Clinic Band
sight-reading could contain slow compound meter (in 6) at the first
audition and
should contain it in the second audition. Clinic Band sight-reading could also contain
cut
time. The Senior Band sight-reading may contain meter changes at the second
audition. The existing
rule is still that one selection will be in duple meter and
the other in a triple or compound meter, with
the above exceptions. A triple selection not
in compound meter would be 3/4 time. A more detailed
guideline for sight-reading
can be found on Band Link.
2. The sight-reading will be scored according to a grid (1-15 points) with
ratings (Superior, Excellent,
etc.) used as a guideline. The sight-reading
selections will be considered to be the same as a grade VI
solo. Separate grids will be
used for each sight-reading selection.
3. Sight-reading selections will be copied and edited onto a blank folder.
4. Each student will be given 30 seconds to study each sight-reading
selection and 60 second to
perform it.
5. There will be a three-year rotating list of sight-reading. It will be
secured each year by the All-State
Chairman. The list will be reviewed and edited as
necessary. The list will be reviewed and edited as
necessary.
Q.
Percussion lists for all bands will include assigned parts: five snares, two
mallets, one timpani
