Technical Proficiency Requirements Timpani:

Timpani Tuning

Timpani tuning will be judged in conjunction with the tuning of the solo and the 2 sightreading selections. If tunings are exactly duplicated in the sightreading selections and/or etude, the judges may hear other tunings to ensure three different tunings. The tuning of the timpani will be judged before the student performs the etude, and in the case of the sightreading, the pitches to be tuned will be written in musical notation on the outside of the sightreading folders. The students tuning can then be evaluated before the student opens the folder to begin studying the sightreading. This procedure is to be repeated for the second sightreading example. This will account for 15 points. The chromatic equivalent will be that the player performs a fp crescendo, diminuendo roll for 5 points.

The tunings will be timed as follows:

Junior Band = 2 minutes total
Clinic Band = 1.5 minutes total
Senior Band = 1 minute total

Junior tunings will include perfect fourths and fifths only.   Clinic and Senior tunings could include all intervals.
