4:30 - 5:45 p.m. Special Learners/General Music/College Division: "Seize the Moment:  The National Board and You".  New opportunities for professional recognition and validation are available to experienced teachers.  This session will consider the recent work by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which has resulted in a national system of “certifying” teachers. 
What it takes to become certified, as well as comments by national Board members and certified Teachers, will be included.  Dr. Mary Palmer, Clinician, University of Central Florida.

Music Industry Council Showcase:  Jupiter Band Instruments, Inc.  “Building a Better Percussion Section.”  This clinic will present inherent barriers in percussion education, such as instrument envy, access to real instruments, and lack of keyboard percussion training.  Programs, methods, and concepts will be presented that address these issues and lower drop-out, eliminate instrument envy, and foster keyboard percussion learning.

Music Industry Council Showcase:  McFadyen Music, Inc.  “The TR147 Clarinet:  What it is and What it does.”  Introduction of a new clarinet designed by Tom Ridenhour, world renowned clarinetist, instrument designer, and master craftsman.

9:30 - 10:45 a.m. General Music:  “Bring the World into Your Classroom”.  Music programs can provide a gateway to the world for students.  In this session, you will participate in songs and dances from Africa, South America, and Asia. Orchestra Division: "If You Can Sing It, You Can Play It!  How to Get Young Students to Hear and Play in Tune from the Start". Through learning to sing and play tonal patterns, students can be taught to hear melodies in a tonal context, and their ears will do the rest!  A way to teach students to listen and adjust fingers in a fun and supportive way.  Improvisation is a snap!  Charlene Dell, Clinician, Poughkeepsie, NY.  Johanna Pollack presiding.

Music Industry Council Showcase:  MacMillan/McGraw-Hill.  “Sing Me a Song of Success!”  Join along in the wonderful singing songs and games of the NEW “Share the Music 2000!”  Thomas Borden, National Music Consultant for the McGraw-Hill School Division, leads elementary music teachers through the learning strategies of the curriculum, while providing experiences that will delight each participant.  The workshop will include singing games and assessment suggestions, as well as Orff and Kodaly possibilities.  Materials will be provided.
