“Happy New Year”

I hope everyone has had a great holiday break and totally refreshed for their return to school. I hope 2007 brings great things for each of you personally and professionally.

Please make sure you read the information about the 2007 SCMEA In-Service Conference held February 8-10 in North Charleston that is on the bandlink webpage. The deadline for sending pre-registrations to Gus Moody is January 15th. You will want to get this mailed to Mr. Moody by the deadline so you won’t have to pay the extra $20. for onsite registration.

This year’s conference is packed with great performances and two awesome clinics. Martin Dickey has spent much time organizing groups from the Southern Division of MENC and from South Carolina. Coordinating twelve performing ensembles is more than double what anyone has had to do in the past. Please thank Martin for his hard work.

Featured performing groups from South Carolina will be:

Summit Parkway Middle School-David Allison and Maria Lee, Directors
(Charleston)School of the Arts Middle-Charlton Singleton, Director
Summerville High School-Leslie Gilreath, Director
Winthrop University/Carolinas Wind Orchestra-Bill Malambri, Director
Palmetto Posaunen-Mark Britt, Director
Winthrop University Wind Symphony-Lorrie Crochet, Director
Directors Big Band-Robert Gardiner, Director

From the Southern Division of MENC, the following outstanding groups will be performing:

Tennessee Tech University Tuba Ensemble-R. Winston Morris, Director
US Army Brass Quintet-Col. Thomas Rontondi, Director
Huntsville High School Symphonic Band-David Spencer, Director
Columbus State University Wind Ensemble-Robert Rumbelow, Director
Parris Island Marine Band-SWD Christian Flores, Director

The Clinics will be:

“Improving Student Performance through Ensemble Performance”-Scott Rush
“Jazz and Improvisation”-Dean Sorenson

The SCBDA committee meetings will be on Friday and Saturday morning. Whether you are a member or not, please plan to attend as many committee meetings as possible. You can speak your feelings at any committee meeting before the voting takes place by the committee members. Your input is invaluable and will assist the committees in making their proposals for another year.

The conference closes with our SCBDA business meeting at 3PM on Saturday. Please attend this meeting so that you can voice your opinion and vote for proposals that will be presented. I hope that you plan on being a part of these great three days in North Charleston on February 8-10, 2007.

Sincerely,

Michael Foxworth
