SCBDA "Team Members"

"Look, Listen, and Learn!"

Last year the membership of the South Carolina Band Directors Association voted to change its by-laws to include a Jazz Committee among its already impressive list of events committees. It was felt that this would be a positive step to promote Jazz Education in South Carolina. The most compelling reason for making this change was to increase participation and to work to develop other Jazz Ensembles from within the SCBDA membership.

This year the will mark the First Annual South Carolina Band Directors Association Jazz Festival and things couldn’t be better. The 28 participating bands will be making history as they become the turning point for Jazz Education in South Carolina.

Jazz Committee Aims And Objectives

  • To stimulate and promote statewide interest in the highest quality of musicianship in jazz performance.
  • To provide directors and students an opportunity to participate in jazz performances and hear and interact with other directors and students in the state.
  • To provide directors and students an opportunity to receive constructive criticism from qualified adjudicators.
  • To provide information regarding jazz performance to directors and students.

The Newberry College Jazz Ensemble will perform at 12:00 noon. The band will play its own set and also back-up Vaughn Nark, the guest soloist. Nark is a trumpeter, fluegel hornist, and valve trombonist who gained much of his fame as the lead trumpeter in the Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force.

Mr. Nark has performed with a veritable "Who’s Who" of the world’s finest jazz musicians and entertainers, including Dizzy Gillespie, Doc Severinsen, Tony Bennett, Henry Mancini, Wynton Marsalis, and many others. Nark performed as lead trumpeter for the inaugural session of the Smithsonian Institutes’ "Jazz Masterworks Orchestra." Most recently, he performed at the 26th Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

Vaughn Nark will also perform with the South Carolina All-State Jazz Band at 12:45 pm. The All-State Band will be directed by Bert Ligon, the Director of Jazz Studies at USC.

The Festival is sponsored for the for the first time by the South Carolina Band Directors Association and will be hosted by Newberry College and the International Association of Jazz Educators. Bill Long is the Director of the Newberry College Jazz Ensemble and is also the coordinator of the Festival.

I would strongly encourage every member of the SCBDA to join me at Newberry College this Saturday, March 7, 1998, to "Look, Listen, and Learn" how to build a Jazz Ensemble.

Let’s "BAND" together! We do make a difference because "Music Is Instrumental To Success!"

South Carolina Band Directors Association
