"Music Is Instrumental To Success"

The new South Carolina Band Directors Association slogan just about sums it up. Research is coming out every day that proves what we as professional music educators have known all along; music is a vital component in the development of the human spirit. This thing we call "Music Education" may very well be the most rewarding educational opportunity available to young people today.

I’ve started several letters recently with the same opening paragraph. My letter in the upcoming SC Musician, the In-Service Conference Issue, will begin with those words. The reason I’ve used these words so often is because I really believe them. What we do is important! I truly believe that the world would not be the same without us. It is time for us to "beat our own drum" and inform South Carolinians everywhere of the job we are doing. We need to "BAND" together and promote our profession.

The South Carolina Band Directors Association is currently involved in an ambitious campaign to champion the cause of Instrumental Music Education. We are working every day to inform the public of the importance of instrumental music education. The Public Relations Committee, chaired by Jerry Gatch, has already devoted countless hours to making the our jobs as band directors easier. We need every member of our association to get involved with this campaign.

The Public Relations Campaign - Progress Report

  • Hired the Chernoff/Silver Public Relations firm to develop a new logo, slogan, and strategies to promote the SCBDA.
  • Completed development of the new logo and slogan. Those attending the SCBDA Fall Meeting were present for the unveiling of our logo.
  • Bought large banners of our logo and slogan that will be displayed at all SCBDA events. They have already been displayed at the Marching Band Championships.
  • Generated "Professional News Articles" that we sent to every newspaper in South Carolina. These articles were seen all over the state. We have had coverage of our events in newspapers and on radio and television.
  • Made a major effort to expand the South Carolina Band Link to better meet the needs of our association. We’ve bought software and a scanner to help Jeff Thompson move forward with this phase of our campaign. The "Director’s Clinic" and other useful information will help us become better educators. We’ve even put the registration forms online to help association members.

If we are to continue the SCBDA Public Relations Campaign, we need your support. Allocate money toward this project - maybe larger schools could afford $100, middle schools $25? 100% participation is more important than how much you can give. Send your checks payable to the SCBDA Public Relations Fund. Mail your contribution to:
